What is Nadi Shodhan?
Nadi Shodhan (commonly translated as Alternate Nostril Breathing) is a breathing technique designed to clear physical and mental blocks. In Sanskrit, Nadi means path or channel (referring to neural and bio-energetic channels), and Shodhan means purification or cleansing.
Unlike rapid or forced breathing exercises, Nadi Shodhan is soft, slow, and calming. It does not require any belief system or spiritual background; it acts as a direct, mechanical regulator of your respiration rate and nervous system pathways.
The Physiology Behind the Breath
Modern physiological research shows that breathing predominantly through one nostril alters autonomic nervous system balance:
- Left Nostril Breathing (Ida): Directly accesses pathways that activate the parasympathetic (calming) nervous system. It reduces heart rate and cools body temperature.
- Right Nostril Breathing (Pingala): Connects with the sympathetic (activating) nervous system, increasing focus, metabolic energy, and alert states.
By systematically alternating breaths between both nostrils, Nadi Shodhan helps synchronize the left and right hemispheres of the brain, balances cardiorespiratory rhythms, and lowers systemic blood pressure.
How to Sit and Practice
Find a comfortable seated position in a chair or on the floor. Keep your spine comfortably straight, shoulders relaxed, and chest open. Close your eyes and take a few normal breaths to settle before using the hand position (Mudra) detailed on the right.
Vishnu Mudra Hand Position
Use your right hand to control the airflow through your nostrils during Nadi Shodhan. Follow this hand gesture:
1. Thumb: Use to gently open or close your Right Nostril.
2. Ring & Little Fingers: Use to gently open or close your Left Nostril.
3. Index & Middle Fingers: Bend these down towards your palm to keep them out of the way.
